If someone asks I will upload the psd

I made this mockup in hope that it may stir an interest in making Ubuntu and Linux in general more beautiful. I have never seen a single application for Linux that looked good. There have been a few emerald themes that look tolerable, but overll, almost everything looks ugly, inconsistent, or both. I know this, or anything like this will never actually be made, but I just wanted to stir some interest.

I had an idea for an expansion idea, where you would just hover your mouse over a folder and it would show you the contents, and you could drag and drop them somewhere or open them. To me, this seems like a much easier way to open a folder, than withthe continuous opening and closing of them. Obviously you can still open folders, but this is for a quick action. Also, I would like to see a better alt-tab, because the current one is almost unusable if you have more than two windows open, as well as looking ugly. I would also like to see a good looking media player, songbird comes close, but there is still not a really good theme for it, and it does not handel video. Finally I would like to see similar icons, for example, maybe all white or all black, so they do not stick out.

Not all of this is my own ideas and work. My biggest influence was this [link] made by carving-a-giant. I see this as a reimagening of his, and am not trying to copy him.

Also, the Pics icon and the folder icon were taken from invaderjohn [link] .

Unfortunately, I also took the wood wallpaper, songbird icon, night blur, boombox, and circut pictures from online, but have lost the source for them. I feel that since they are being used to show of another design, and are not being redistributed, it would not anger anyone. I created the Pic-00-1 picture.

Anyone may alter, manipulate, or make a theme out of all of the content I have made (not invaderjohn, or any of the wallpaper which are not mine).

This was my first design ever, please me nice.

Is it possible to make a Windows theme like this? 7's looks are becoming bland to me.

This is perfect for a theme! I'm about to test-run ubuntu and am looking for a simple/dark theme.

AGH! Sucks that it is just a mock-up. This theme would more than likely wind up the most popular! Specially with those with light sensitivity issues. =P

It's not a theme, silly - this would be a totally redesigned UI. That said, it's not at all far off from the Unity project, which has the Vista-like start button at the upper left and the application menu bar nested in the upper panel. Very pretty, and very functional! I don't think I could stand those fat Vista-esque window borders, though. Way too much screen space sacrificed, there, no matter *how* beautiful, and they *are* that. = P

I don't agree that Gnome can't be pretty, though. Slap on Cairo-Dock and the right skin and icon pack, and it's easy to get an attractive result. [link]

On the bit about Alt+Tab, do you mean the Static Switcher? The Ring Switcher through Compiz Fusion is much prettier and more functional.

I really dig this mockup, and I think you should try collaborating with the others you link to, and make an actual theme.
Looks great.
